Can I give stock or appreciated securities?
MDM accepts gifts of publicly traded stock through its brokerage account. Because these gifts are time sensitive due to current market rates at the time of transfer. Therefore, advance notice from the donor is essential to receive the gift properly.
What MDM needs before a transferThe donor should provide the name or ticker of the stock and the number of shares being transferred, along with which missionary or fund the gift should support. This allows MDM to identify the incoming transfer and confirm receipt.
How the gift is handled once receivedMDM sells the shares received and the gift is recorded at the settlement price. Due to market volatility, the intended stock value donated is not always the value recorded for the donation. MDM sells gifted stocks within 72 hours of receipt. The gift is designated according to the donor's instructions.
Receipting requirementsStock gift acknowledgment letters must confirm no goods or services were provided in exchange for the gift, consistent with IRS substantiation requirements for non-cash contributions.
Note: Donors and their financial advisors may contact support@modernday.org to coordinate a stock gift.
