What is a spiritual covering and who qualifies?

A spiritual covering is the pastor, ministry director, or organizational leader of a formal church or ministry organization who provides accountability, oversight, and spiritual authority over your missionary work. MDM requires one confirmed spiritual covering for every missionary.

To qualify as a spiritual covering, the person must:

  • Be a pastor, staff member, or leader with a formal church or ministry organization.
  • Have direct, ongoing relationship with you and your ministry.
  • Be willing to confirm your character, calling, and accountability via email when we reach out.
  • Agree to remain in covering authority with you throughout your time with MDM.

Common examples of qualifying coverings:

  • Your home church pastor or associate pastor.
  • The director or staff leader of the missions organization you serve under (YWAM, Circuit Riders, IHOPKC, Operation Mobilization, etc.).
  • A pastoral leader with the ministry you are serving in the field.

Note: A spiritual covering cannot be a family member, a personal friend without a formal ministry title, someone who is not actively engaged in your ministry, or a collection of individuals that advise you informally. If your covering situation is non-standard (e.g., serving in a closed country, transitioning between organizations), contact info@modernday.org and we will work through it with you.
